The 2011 SOEST Open House was a great success!

Congratulations and mahalo to all who participated in another successful Open House at our facilities on the UH Mānoa campus! We were host to over 6600 guests on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 October 2011, sharing some of the excitement and importance of what we do at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.

Peter Rappa In Memory of Peter Rappa

The 2011 SOEST Open House was dedicated in memory of Peter Rappa. The ceremony took place Friday, October 21st at 11 am in the HIG Courtyard. Peter, formerly of the UH Sea Grant College Program, played an instrumental part of every SOEST Open House since it began in 1989. He rigged up the sound system for us in the HIG Courtyard and, when the idea for a K-12 poster contest came up, Peter volunteered to collect all the posters, secured a panel of judges and managed the project. SOEST is home to the academic departments of Oceanography, Geology and Geophysics, Meteorology, and Ocean and Resources Engineering, as well as several related research institutes. SOEST’s graduate programs in these sciences are highly ranked nationally and SOEST brings in close to $70 million dollars in research funding per year.

The SOEST Open House presents a diverse array of entertaining and educational “hands-on” activities, which highlight the research conducted by our faculty, students, and staff.

Your students and families will learn about volcanoes, tsunamis, El Nino, planetary exploration, hurricanes, coastal erosion, and marine ecosystems to mention just a few topics, through a variety of videos, posters, and interactive demonstrations. They will visit state-of-the-art laboratories and hear about cutting-edge research from the scientists who are making the new discoveries!

If you are a teacher planning on bringing a class, please stay tuned for registration information. The public is welcome to come at any time without a reservation.

The SOEST Open House is only offered every two years. We hope that you will be able to join us for this great event next time!
