2011 SOEST Open House was dedicated
in memory of Peter Rappa.

Peter Rappa The dedication took place Friday, October 21st at 11 am in the HIG Courtyard.

Peter Rappa, formerly of the UH Sea Grant College Program, played an instrumental part of every SOEST Open House since it began in 1989. He rigged up the sound system for us in the HIG Courtyard so that we could make general announcements and provided music with his personal collection of cassette tapes and later CDs. When the idea for a K-12 poster contest came up, Peter volunteered to collect all the posters, secured a panel of judges and managed the project.

Besides helping with set up and coordination, he ensured that Sea Grant participated in a big way with large displays and interactive activities through the assistance of as many Sea Grant staff members as possible.

Just one week before Peter passed away on May 9th at the age of 59, after a long struggle with cancer, he made it known that he was available to assist with this year’s Open House and for us to let him know how he can help.

Peter is survived by his wife Myrtle, daughter Adriana and step-son Jason.
