*Note about arrival times: From evaluations given to us by teachers after previous years events, it became evident that some of the younger grades felt overwhelmed by the older students. Since we can't hold our event over two school days, we have decided to allow grades K-6 the opportunity to arrive starting at 8:30am, and permit grades 7 and up to come starting at 10am. Hopefully this will give the younger students a chance to get comfortable before the older students arrive. This is the first time we've done this, so please bear with us as we try to accommodate all of our visitors. Mahalo!

Programs, maps and other information will be added to this website as we get closer to he event date. Stay tuned!

The School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is pleased to announce that the 9th SOEST Open House will be held on October 19th and 20th, 2007. On behalf of the Dean of SOEST and the Open House Planning Committee, we would like to invite you to attend this year’s Open House.

SOEST is home to the academic departments of Oceanography, Geology and Geophysics, Meteorology, and Ocean and Resources Engineering, as well as several related research institutes. SOEST’s graduate programs in these sciences are highly ranked nationally and SOEST brings in close to $70 million dollars in research funding per year.

The SOEST Open House presents a diverse array of entertaining and educational “hands-on” activities, which highlight the research conducted by our faculty, students, and staff.

Your students and families will learn about volcanoes, tsunamis, El Nino, planetary exploration, hurricanes, coastal erosion, and marine ecosystems to mention just a few topics, through a variety of videos, posters, and interactive demonstrations. They will visit state-of-the-art laboratories and hear about cutting-edge research from the scientists who are making the new discoveries!

This year’s Open House theme will be “From Ocean Depths to Outer Space! ”

For more information, please contact Tara Hicks Johnson at 808-956-3151; email: hickst@hawaii.edu.

If you are a teacher planning on bringing a class, please make your group reservation prior to Friday 28 September 2007. The public is welcome to come at any time without a reservation.

The SOEST Open House is only offered every two years. We hope that you will be able to join us for this great event!
