“Zonal jets in southeastern Indian Ocean and the western rock lobster recruitment”, a presentation by M. Feng (CSIRO, 12/22/09)

  • Mean zonal jets to the west of the western Australian coast possibly due to eddy forcing from the instabilities of the southward Leeuwin Current.
  • The question of why is there an eastern boundary on the first place is still puzzling (McCreary). The eddies seem to contribute to the Leeuwin current but the Leeuwin Current is itself the source of the eddies. This is “a chicken-egg problem”.
  • The Leeuwin Current has a mean velocity of 10 cm/s while the eddies have an amplitude of 50 cm/s so the GLM theory might work in this case.
