12.24.10: Evolution of potential density at WHOTS location in the 1/10th deg OFES simulation

In this note, we look at the potential density σ field at 30 m in the HYCOM simulation and found that one Spring event is associated with a mesoscale feature advected southward. Time series of σ at the WHOTS location in the 1/10th deg. OFES simulation is also shown in this note (Fig. 4) and reveals that this simulation also reproduce Spring events.

The evolution of the horizonal structure of σ during 2003 and 2004 is shown in Fig. 1. There is only one event, on April 20, 2004, of a submesoscale feature advected from the north. Otherwise, as already observed, the submesoscale structure of the eddy field in the mixed layer is in that simulation generated mostly from horizontal eddy stirring –look at the HYCOM simulation to know if submesoscale features are generated other than by eddy stirring.
