Currently, Ms. Michelle Kay (Dole Middle school, Honolulu) is working with the lab to bring the excitement of science and the scientific method into her classroom. Her class webpage contains a variety of photographs and information on her normal class activities as well as those of our collaboration. As part of an NSF funded project, Ms. Kay is participating in field operations, developing lesson plans and teaching materials. Her project blog describing her activities is linked here. Dr. Drazen and other lab members also give lectures and activities at local schools.
Course Instruction
Dr. Drazen teaches (with Dr. Erica Goetze) a graduate course in the Oceanography department entitled the Ecology of Pelagic Marine Animals (OCN627). This course is held in the spring semester and includes lectures, labs, field trips, discussions, and student presentations. I encourage advanced undergraduates and graduate students from other departments to take the course so long as they have had previous coursework in marine ecology or biology. Please contact me if you are interested in taking the course.
With Dr. Craig Smith, Dr. Drazen also teaches Deep-Sea Biology (OCN630). This course is held in the Fall semester and combines lectures and student led discussions. This course is designed for graduate students and advanced undergraduates.
