Selected Synergistic Activities
- Promote Literacy in Microbial Oceanography (MO): Co-authored “Key Concepts in Microbial Oceanography” brochure. Co-organized EARTH teacher workshop in MO. Incorporated MO content into Fluid Earth/Living Ocean textbook revision (4th edition). Created MO programs for K-12 teachers and students. Co-convener of “Recent Advances in MO” Fall AGU session. Co-founder of Ocean Literacy Alliance-Hawaii (OLA-HI).  Supervise the content of the C-MORE Education (cmore.soest.hawaii.edu/education.htm) and Ocean FEST (oceanfest.soest.hawaii.edu) websites.

- Promote Diversity in the Earth and Ocean Sciences: Co-created minority-focused C-MORE Undergraduate Scholars Program. Co-convened “Partnerships for Education and Diversity in the Earth and Ocean Sciences“ AGU session. Team-taught “Malama I Ka Aina“ teacher-training culture-science course for multiple semesters. Created Hawaiian culturally focused geoscience curriculum for the UH College of Education's Center of Disability Studies. Mentor for the MS-PhD program. Received three Student Equity, Excellence & Diversity (SEED) grants to promote Hawaiian science. Received 2 NSF and 1 NASA grant to create Hawaiian culturally relevant science curriculum. Mentored 22 undergraduate and graduate students and 11 teachers; all but 3 of the students are ethnic or racial minorities.

- Promote family geoscience events in Hawaii:  Workshop instructor at annual Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery to promote hands-on science in astronomy, geology and related fields; C-MORE Coordinator of biennial SOEST Open House event; Organize Ohana (family) days for Na Pua Noeau’s Native Hawaiian students. Received NSF/GEO grants through Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in Geoscience (OEDG) and Geoscience Education (GeoEd) programs to run career-oriented ocean-themed family science nights statewide in Hawaii for elementary (20/year) and middle/high school (4/year) students and their families.
