Figure 4: Suspended particle size distributions obtained with the LISST-100 insturment in streams and on
the reef in South Kaneohe Bay. The particle size distribution in low turbidity (~8-10 NTU) Waiakeakua
Stream water is dominated by small (<50 µm) inorganic particles, most likely derived from entrainment of
soil/sediment by the flowing stream. In Lululuku stream, an abundance of filamentous algae is relfected
in a higher turbidity (~20-30 NTU) and a more variable size distribution including a greater abundance
of larger particles. Particle size distributions in extremely low turbidity (<2 NTU) bottom and midcolumn
seawater over the reef near Coconut Island are highly variable, likely reflecting the occasional passage
of plankton particles across the optical path of the instrument.
