Scholarships, Fellowships, and Financial Aid

The following scholarships are available through the GES program. Announcements of application deadlines are made each semester.

Bernice C. Loui Environmental Science Scholarship – Applicant must be a full-time student and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, a letter from the applicant is required outlining his/her progress toward the GES degree and future career plans and goals. One letter of recommendation is also required from the student’s GES advisor or other faculty member, employer or community leader.

Chevron Global Environmental Science Scholarship – Applicant must be a full-time student at junior or senior level and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better. Some degree of financial need, not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines. In addition, a letter from the applicant is required outlining his/her progress toward the GES degree and future career plans and goals. One letter of recommendation is also required by a faculty member in SOEST.

Sarp Kayan Scholarship – Applicant must be a full-time student, sophomore or higher with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Some degree of financial need, not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines. Applicants must submit a letter describing their relationship to Hawaii, their interest in oceanography and how they will use the degree in oceanography.

GES Fellowships for Senior Thesis Research – Applicant must be a full-time GES student at the senior level and must provide a budget outlining Senior Thesis Research.

SOEST Tuition Waivers for Outstanding Progress – SOEST awards partial tuition waivers to full-time students with at least a 3.00 overall GPA (3.50 for Pacific Asian Scholarship Waivers) with grades of A, B, C and CR grades (students will be disqualified with I or W grades).

Assistance available to students making satisfactory progress in a degree program includes grants, loans, student employment, and research fellowships and assistantships.
