Maile students carving ʻohe kāpala with Aunty Chantal.
Last week we invited Uncle George Place and Chantal Chung, cultural practitioners in the art of ʻohe kapala (bamboo stamp making) from the Big Island, to teach us how to carve our own unique stamp representing our individual science research for printing graduation khei. Kīhei (traditional Hawaiian ceremonial attire) can be worn at graduation and any time you participate in cultural protocol. We are very honored that these cultural practitioners will be guiding us in making traditional kīhei at our pre-graduation workshop. Our graduating Maile mentees and mentors will be wearing these kīhei in their commencement exercises this year.
