Current Position (since 1996):

Associate Researcher, Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Hawaii

Education:

Ph.D., Geological Oceanography, University of Washington, 1988
Dissertation Title: "Spatial and Temporal Variations in the Petrology, Morphology, and Tectonics of a Migrating Spreading Center: The Endeavour Segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge"

M.S., Geological Oceanography, University of Washington, 1980
Thesis Topic: "Ion microprobe studies of water diffusion in rhyolite melts"

B.A., Geochemistry, Wellesley College, 1977

Research

Most of my current research focuses on the magmatic and tectonic processes which operate along the mid-ocean ridge system, where 70% of the Earth's surface has been generated. I have primarily worked on anomalous spreading centers, with the philosophy that we can learn something about the "normal" system by seeing how it is perturbed. Most of my field work has been conducted along the Juan de Fuca Ridge (N.E. Pacific) and the southern Chile Ridge, although I have also participated in programs along the Northern East Pacific Rise, and have studied pieces of oceanic crust exposed in the Troodos ophiolite, Cyprus.

Teaching

Although my primary responsibility is research, I also occasionally teach in the Department of Geology and Geophysics graduate level seminars on oceanic crust and the undergraduate Marine Geology course.

Service
