Death Valley - Field Trip
University of Hawai'i at Manoa -- School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology -- Geology & Geophysics

Overview

The Department of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Hawai'i - Manoa campus offers a seminar in scientific writing during the Spring semester. The special focus of the class in 2006 was early metazoan evolution. The course was taught by GG professors Eric Gaidos and Steven Stanley, whose emphases are in planetary and evolutionary biology and paleontology.

We were afforded an opportunity by the Astrobiology Institute to see first-handed what the geologic background for our study pertains to. This is a special treat because, as Hawaii is a geologically wondrous state, rocks old enough to contain evidence of earliest life on Earth are not among the ocean or volcanoes here.

We present this summary of our field trip and course as a tribute to those that made it possible and an avenue to show off our work. Thank you for everything!  -The students of GG710, Spring 2006.
