List of Weights
After reading the website entries on the gravity core, brainstorm all of the pieces of equipment that would add weight to a crane that is deploying and retrieving a gravity corer to/from a depth of 6565 meters.
Note: One piece of equipment that is not mentioned on the web site is a pinger. A pinger sends out a pulsing signal to the ship and is attached to the cable, about 50 feet above the corer itself. It is made mostly of stainless steel, and is about 2.5 feet long, and 6 inches in diameter.

After you have filled out the above table, compare your estimates with those of your classmates. Your teacher may wish for you to do this in partners/groups or as a class. Explain your reasoning behind your estimates.
Next, your teacher will give you a list of all the equipment and the actual weights of each piece. Calculate the percentage of the total weight for each piece of equipment.
