What is your job on the ship? Mechanical technician for Jason II, DSL-120 and the winch.

How long have you been doing this? I’ve been working at sea for the past 15 years. I’ve been a mechanical tech for the last 3 years.

What is your favorite part of what you do? Sub-sea research and ocean exploration.

What is the least favorite part of your work? Being away from my family.

How/why did you get into this field? I come from a family of sailors. I was working in the field and was approach by WHOI for the this job.

What are your career goals? When I started with WHOI I was building equipment. I have recently returned and hope to expand my work on the more technical aspects of the operation.

What is the biggest misconception about what you do:Ignorance about life at sea.

What is the most important skill/trait that you rely on? Problem solving skills and my ability to make do with what’s available.

What is your most memorable experience from your career? The discovery of the Titanic on my first cruise with WHOI. Being present for the discovery of a 3rd century ship in the Black Sea that was in the anoxic layer and amazingly well preserved.

Tell us something about yourself. A am a first generation American. My mother is from Norway and by dad from Argentina. I have 3 kids, 2 girls and a boy. I enjoy motorcycles, snow skiing and have recently gotten into snow mobiles. I have a Scotch collie, a dog that could not take the heat of Guam because it has such thick hair.
