Nathan C. Becker

What is your job on the ship? “Map Guru” I compile all available sonar data and turn them into maps.

How long have you been doing this? I’ve been doing marine geology for eight years, but have specialized in sonar mapping in the last five years.

What is your favorite part of what you do? The act of discovery—often I get to be the first person to see an unexplored submarine region.

What is the least favorite part of your work? Crunch time to meet deadlines.

How/why did you get into this field? I liked volcanoes since I was a kid, got into marine geology when I had the change to dive in ALVIN.

What are your career goals? Short term-finish my Ph.D. - Long term-a job where I can apply my skills and knowledge.

What is the biggest misconception about what you do:That I’m a geophysicist-I’m actually quite found of rocks and I use geology to interpret and “ground truth” sonar maps.

What is the most important skill/trait that you rely on? Patience-most problems can be solved with enough time and careful thought.

What is your most memorable experience from your career? My first visit to the active lava flows of Kilauea volcano. Very close second: my first submersible dive.
