Logan P. Johnson

What is your job on the ship? I am the Third Officer. I work for the Captain. I’m in charge of a navigation watch, and I’m responsible for safety gear and training.

How long have you been doing this? 1, 2, 3 … 10 years.

What is your favorite part of what you do? Long stretches of time off, travel, fresh air, looking out the window and a somewhat flexible work schedule are my favorite parts of the job.

What is the least favorite part of your work? School has been my least favorite part of going to sea.

How/why did you get into this field? I grew up in a maritime family and was inspired by the sea stories of family and friends.

What is the biggest misconception about what you do: People seem to think going to sea is sipping drinks next to the Jacuzzi pool, in the hot sun and in exotic places. It’s not like that.

What is the most important skill/trait that you rely on? Eyes and ears are critical. Geometry and trigonometry are very important to navigation. Seamanship involves knowledge about many things including marlinspike work, weather, rust busting, paint, line handling, boat handling and a slew of other things.

What is your most memorable experience from your career? The most memorable experience so far is rigging and sailing a replica of an early 19th. century full-rigged ship and working with actors and extras to film an upcoming Hollywood movie.

Tell us something about yourself. I like to travel, sail, hike, read, cook and sleep late. I currently live in Washington State on the Olympic Peninsula.
