What is your job on the ship? Scientific team member, field of microbiology.

How long have you been doing this? Four years as a laboratory research technician, first time out to sea.

What is your favorite part of what you do? Discovering new and unique microorganisms and the ways they interact in extreme environment.

What is the least favorite part of your work? Getting frustrated with myself when I cannot get a protocol to work in the lab.

How/why did you get into this field? Opportunity to attend grad school with a professor I highly admire; chance to improve lab technique.

What are your career goals? Pathology/forensics or studying food and water born pathogens.

What is the biggest misconception about what you do:When I say I’m a biologist, people assume I’m either a terrestrial ecologist or marine biologist. They don’t realize all the different fields of study that are available.

What is the most important skill/trait that you rely on? Patience; above all else. Molecular methods in a lab environment take TIME!

What is your most memorable experience from your career? So far, this cruise!

Tell us something about yourself. From Seattle, Washington, one dog named Elvis (basset hound). Currently attending Western Washington University to obtain an M.S. in geomicrobiology.
