Meet the Scientists and Crew!

Lisa Swinnard

My name is Lisa Swinnard and I'm starting the second year of my Masters degree with Mike Garcia. My thesis project is on secondary volcanism on and around Kauai. During my first year I analyzed a suite of Koloa Volcanics from Kauai (rejuvenated stage) for Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes. Following the cruise, I will be analyzing a set of the rocks that were collected in order to compare them geochemically to the onshore secondary stage lavas.

Lisa's Interview with Linda, our Teacher at Sea

The rocks collected on this cruise are a part of my master's thesis research. My supervisor, Mike Garcia, is the chief scientist.

Education. BSc. at the University of British Columbia

My current research is Geochemisty of the secondary volcanism on and around Kauai.  Geochemical characterization of Kauai post shield stage.

I like going to sea on the Kilo Moana because I do not have to cook for myself. I like the view through the cameras of the Jason 2 of a place that no one has ever seen before.

As a scientist I am grateful for the opportunities to travel to interesting places. I have had opportunities to do things most people haven't. I enjoy furthering our knowledge of the earth.
