Dennis Geist

Geist at the eruption of Sierra Negra volcano, Galapagos.

Dennis Geist is a jack of all trades, using petrology, geochemistry, volcanology, and GPS to study volcanoes around the world. He is based at the University of Idaho, but has worked in the Galapagos Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Ecuador, Idaho, and a ton of other places I can't remember right now, and will be working with Garcia and Harpp in Antarctica this January. Denny grew up in Portland, Oregon, where he went to school with the creator of the Simpson's. Contrary to a spurious rumor started on a previous cruise, he was not actually the inspiration for the character "Milhouse".

Dennis 2

I have an interest in submarine volcanism. It is a good opportunity to work with Garcia and Ito.
Education. HSG, Lincoln, AB, Dartmouth, PhD - Oregon
Current research. Active volcanism in the Galapagos, Magma evolution at Hekla, Iceland; the Yellowstone hotspot.
What you like about going to sea? The smell of my cabin. Working with great people in a consuming, team effort.
What you like best about being a scientist. Working on complex problems. Working with keen students and people who are smarter than me.
