Sailing to the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" - Survey of Underwater Plastic and Ecosystem Response

Chief Scientist Tara Clemente and Marine Science Educator Kimberley Weersing of C-MORE lead this cruise, during which they will collect marine debris to sample the microbial communities associated with plastic particles that have accumulated in the North Pacific Gyre. Lucy Marcus, a marine biologist and videographer, will be participating and will blog about her experience.

OPEREX Cruise Ocean Perturbation Experiment

Chief Scientist Zbigniew Kolber of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) leads C-MORE’s Ocean Perturbation Experiment (OPEREX) cruise in the waters north of the main Hawaiian islands from July 30 to 14 August. Miriam Sutton, a North Carolina middle school teacher, will be participating in the research cruise as a Teacher-at-Sea and will blog about her experience.

They will be investigating the feeding dynamics of animals on the seafloor and the effects of global climate change on bentho-pelagic coupling (how the water column and seafloor interact).
