James R. Gaines

Dr. James R. Gaines is currently a Professor of Physics, Director of Materials Science and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii. He recieved his PhD degree in Physics from Washington University, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honary Society.

Dr. Gaines' background includes teaching and research at several institutions, including the Centre de Recherches Nucleaires (Saclay, France), Linkoping University (Sweden), MIT, Harvard, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Ohio State University. He has served on the Board of Directors for Lake Shore Cryogenics, the scientific advisory board for Super Conductive Componants, Inc. and on the executive committee of the American Physical Society. He is a fellow in the American Physical Society, and received the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation fellow and the Spark Matsunaga Fellow for Research in Renewable Energy.

Dr. Gaines has published more than 120 refereed journal articles and three editions of a study guide that accompanies a major textboon on introductory physics. His major areas of interest are solid hydrogen and its isotopes, superconductivity, composit materials, and temperature sensors, thermometry and associated instrumentation.

In addition, Dr. Gaines started research programs at both Ohio State University and the University of Hawaii on copper-oxide superconductors.
