The North Shore occupies the middle of the northern coast of Maui and is centered on Kahului Bay. From Waihe’e to Lower Pa’ia the shore is backed by a narrow coastal plain that fronts the saddle region between the West Maui Mountains and the lower western slopes of Haleakala. The North Shore begins at the Waihe’e River mouth, as the rugged cliffs of northwest Maui end and the lower coastal plain begins. The plain extends for 5 mi southeast of the river mouth to Kahului Harbor, at which point the shore turns and trends east for another 30 ft to Lower Pa’ia. Beyond Pa’ia the plain grades into rugged cliffs that dominate the remainder of east Maui coast, all the way around to La Perouse Bay. The 19 mi of coast between Waihe’e River and Maliko Bay contains 31 beaches that occupy 10 mi (55%) of the coast, the remainder being dominated by low basalt shoreline and the breakwaters and seawalls of Kahului Harbor.
