Beach Description
Kook's Beach is located west of Ka’a Point and is primarily used by wind and kite-surfers. The steep, narrow beach has generally small waves and wind chop at the shore, making it suitable for swimmers with some experience. Offshore reefs may be sharp and dangerous and should be approached with care.
Ka'a Point Beach is segmented by five basalt groins and is used for wind and kite-surfing. The steep, narrow beach has generally small waves at the shore, making it suitable for swimmers with some experience. The shoreline is more exposed in the east and is used as a wind and kite-surfing launch site, making swimming possibly hazardous. The offshore reefs and basalt groins may be sharp, slippery, and dangerous and should be approached with care.
Kanaha Beach Park is the largest and most popular beach park on the North Shore of Maui. Groins divide the beach into three sections. The central section is the main recreational beach for the park and has a lifeguard tower. The eastern half of this section is the main swimming area and has a floating swimming net to keep wind surfers out. It is recommended that swimming be done earlier in the day as conditions are usually calmer and windsurfing is permitted only after 11 am. Later in the day trade winds and associated swells increase in strength and windsurfers are frequent, making swimming possibly hazardous. Waves at the shore are generally small making this location suitable for swimmers with at least some experience. The groins and offshore reef may be sharp, slippery, and dangerous and should be approached with care. The park provides bathroom facilities and parking.
Papa'ula Point Beach is located east of the Kanaha Beach system and is segmented by five groins. The shoreline is fronted by beachrock and inner and outer fringing reefs making swimming possibly hazardous. There are usually small waves and wind chop at the shore, and beach erosion has destroyed some of the protective structures. The beachrock and reefs may be sharp, slippery, and dangerous and should be approached with caution.
