Georeferenced NOAA/NOS Aerial Photography by Pacific Disaster Center(PDC) in year 2000 - Readme

These georeferenced NOAA/NOS aerial photography by PDC were downloaded from Asia Pacific Natural Hazards Information Network in the format of zipped ECW (Enhanced Compressed Wavelet). A free copy of ER viewercan be obtained from ER Mapper website.

Files that are available for download from Coastal Geology Group's FTP site are in the format of GeoJPG. GeoJPG are jpg raster files that have an accompanying geo-referencing file allowing these files to work within a GIS (Geographical Information System).

True color diapositive photographs were acquired by the NOAA/NOS Benthic Habitat Mapping Program during March through July 2000 at the 1:24,000 scale for the majority of the shoreline of the main Hawaiian islands. These diapositive photographs can be queried, viewed and downloaded on Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA)'s website. The photographs were scanned in at 800 dpi, which yields a ground resolution of approximately 0.85 meters. The scans were saved as TIFF files, processed and geo-referenced to UTM 4N / NAD83 using ground control points derived from USGS 1m IDP DOQQ's. The PDC also obtained additional flight lines of the same collection in September 2002. The PDC provided NOAA/NOS with copies of the scans and retained the prints.

Please note that Benthic Habitat Mapping of the Main Eight Hawaiian Islands produce a different set of georeferenced mosaics using NOAA/NOS aerial photography. Georeferencing/mosaicking of the imagery was performed using PCI OrthoEngine, and Erdas OrthoBase. These georeference imagery is available for download from their website

Coastal Geology Group generated hi-resolution JPEG images to meet an array of public needs. TIFF format images for some islands are available for download as zipped (.zip) packages containing the TIFF image and an accompanying world file (.tfw) of the same name containing georeferencing information. These files are intended for use by professionals familiar with GeoTIFFs.
