Time Heading Depth Comments
0917     x 455 y -423. We see bottom. Folded sheet lava and flat striated sheet lava. (helluhraun). Heavily sedimented at least 2.5. Settling down to take sample 1.
0921     Sitting on heavily folded sheet flow. With thick sediment cover - not much glass seen.
0931     Just finished picking up rock sample number 1 into basket location 7a. Folded sheet: glassy..
0933   2610 Going from folded sheet to flat sheet. Heavily sedimented: 100% cover on the flat sheets. Step caused by subsided flat sheet flow. Up step and into lobate flow with similar heavy sediment cover as before: scale 2.5 - 3.
0935 114 2610 Over lobate lava. Similar sediment thickness. See glass but not glassy.
0936 114 2608 Over lobate lava then on to folded sheets again grade into jumbled flow. A drop/step looks like collapse. First a small one and then a bigger one. Collapse with a broken sheet flow at the bottom.
0939 111 2606 Passed a contact in the lava: could be in a younger flow.
0940   2609 Broken up and folded sheet flow: still heavily sedimented where there are flat surfaces. Coming up to another collapse. Broken sheet flow.
0941 113 2611 Another drop: Blee suggests a fault from orientation. Jumbled sheet flow. Seems to be glassier with less sediment but difficult to judge because of the jumbled sheet flow.
0943 113 2608 Over jumbled sheet flow. Looks more glassy. Heavily folded and jumbled sheet flow. 150 meters from waypoint 2.
0945     Coming up to lobate with folded sheets. On the margin of lobate and folded sheets. This could be the contact. With significantly less sedimentation than in the beginning. May be down to 1.5.
0947 110 2605 Over lobate flow into jumbled sheet flow with very uneven topography.
0948     From jumbled sheet and into lobate. Definitely more glass than in the beginning. Occasional pillows in lobate flow.
0949 101 2602 Over lobate. Large wavelength lobate with a lot of buds. Into short section of pillows and then back into lobate flow.
0951 101 2600 Close to bottom over lobate flow. Fair amount of sediment: 1.5.
0953 101 2601 Close to bottom on lobate flow. Sediment about 1.5.
0954 101 2598 Moving from lobate to lobate with pillows. Mainly lobate.
0955 102 2597 Travelling over lobate flow. Fair amount of sediment on flat surfaces.
0957 101 2596 Over lobate flow. A small but deep collapse 5-6 m diameter. Into pillow/lobate: much more broken up than before. Channels? With lobate and folded sheets. Many small collapses.
0958 103 2593 Over lobate with lot of buds. Sediment could be less than before. Still over lobate with lot of buds.
1000     Coming over lobate with sheets.
1005   2590 Collecting sample 2: x 843 y -534
1009   2590 x 839 y -533
1012 113 2587 Over lobate lava. Less sediment than in the beginning. Increasing biological activity. Pillows with buds in a lobate flow.
1013 115 2585 Over lobate flow with occasional pillows. Definitely less sediment than in the beginning.
1014     Lobate flow with occasional pillows.
1017   2581 x 925 y -576. Have arrived in Oasis. Yellow fiber optics cable over a collapse.
      Temperature 5.17 C and 4.9 C. Mussel collecting.
1034   2582 x 932 y -582 Mussel pot sampling.
1058     Moving about Oasis. Deep collapses. In a collapse area.
1059   2581 x- 941 y- -589. Over collapses. The flow appears to be lobate.
A dead extinct chimney 13 meters high.
1103 214 2580 Just passed over a collapse area. Lobate flows on top.
1104 060 2581 Many collapses in lobate flows. Over a collapse still with some of the roof rock standing.
1105   2582 Over a big collapse.
1114   2581 x- 939 y- -592 On the edge of a collapse. Sampling mussels.
1120     Mussel pot 2 in the basket.
1134     Moving between biosample localities and are again on the edge of a deep collapse.
1137   2582 x 939 y -579. Settling down to take biosample number 3.
1159   2582 Just picked up sample pot. x 938 y -579. Simmering among the mussel groups and white coloring of the mussels where there is maximum simmering.
1214     Sampling near a collapse with fine scale layering in the walls, each cm to few tens of cm maximum and with lava pillars.
1216 002 2581 More collapses. In a collapse area.
1243   2582 x- 944 y- -531 Just collected a biological sample.
1309   2582 Collecting mussels.
1321 325 2582 Moving slowly over collapses and folded sheets.
1329     Measuring temperature 5.9 C
1337   2583 Just picked up sample number 3 with barnacles
1353     Lava beginning to look more glassy and less sedimented than on the first part of the drive from Oasis. Might have crossed a contact. Lobate lava with pillows.
1356     Collecting a rock sample.
1400     Collecting Took video of the less lobate lava we are collecting.
      A gap in tape
1504   2583 x 1571 y 553. Over lobate lava with pillows and lots of buds.
1505     Over lobate lava with lot of buds. Sediment thickness 0.5:1. See lot of glassy surfaces.
1514     Black smoker. x 1627 y -540. Leaving for the surface.
