U/W on KM08-18, RADYO (Radiance in a Dynamic Ocean, http://www.opl.ucsb.edu/radyo/) Cruise, on station, one mile north of FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform, (http://www.sio.ucsd.edu/voyager/flip/), approximately mid-way between Santa Cruz Island (one of the Channel Islands) and the U.S. West Coast (Santa Barbara). Since our last report we have recovered and re-deployed the Bluefin AUV, deployed and recovered the Surfactant Skimmer, and conducted multiple MASCOT (optics sensor) casts, RADCAM (Radiance Camera) casts, HYPERPRO (optics) casts, CTD casts, TSRB (Tethered Spectral Radiometer Buoy) casts, and Three-Level Camera casts. The camera and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) sensor for recording ship’s pitch/roll motion continue to collect data. Testing/re-initialization of primary control computer in Engineering has been deferred until our next inport. Remainder of cruise will be conducted on secondary control computer only. Small boat operating at required capacity. Ship, crew, and science doing well. More than one science group on board has commented that they are gathering excellent data! We will be leaving station late tonight and returning to Port Hueneme, ETA 0800 23 September.

U/W on KM08-18, RADYO Cruise, on station, one mile north of FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform, (http://www.sio.ucsd.edu/voyager/flip/), approximately mid-way between Santa Cruz Island (one of the Channel Islands) and the U.S. West Coast (Santa Barbara). “The waters surrounding the Channel Islands National Park are home to many diverse and beautiful species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises). About one third of the cetacean species found worldwide can be seen right here in our own backyard, the Santa Barbara Channel. The 27 species sighted in the channel include gray, blue, humpback, minke, sperm, and pilot whales; orcas; Dall’s porpoise; and Risso’s, Pacific white-sided, common, and bottlenose dolphins” (http://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/whale-watching.htm). We saw a pod of 30-40 Pacific white-sided dolphins this morning! Since our last report, we have successfully tested and deployed the Bluefin AUV, deployed and recovered the Surfactant Skimmer, conducted 5 MASCOT (optics sensor) casts, and 2 RADCAM (Radiance Camera) casts. The camera and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) sensor for recording ship’s pitch/roll motion, that were mounted before our departure, have been operating continuously since we left. All going well!
