U/W on KM 10-05, a fourteen-day cruise using ROV JASON to explore underwater volcanic activity near Guam and Rota. Cruise blog is at: www.nwrota2010.blogspot.com

During the last 24 hours, we conducted more mapping and plankton net tows/casts, before repairs were completed with Jason, and it was launched this morning for its final dive of this trip. Jason will be retrieved this afternoon, we’ll conduct some more mapping, then proceed back to Apra Harbor, Guam, overnight. ETA pierside remains 0800 30 March. Bow thruster is still not fully operational (we have regained thrust, but no rotation), and the Caley winch remains non-operational. Repair parts are enroute to Guam for the bow thruster. Caley winch motor and variable-speed drive will be shipped back to the US for repair upon arrival Guam.

During the last 24 hours, we completed another Jason dive yesterday afternoon, then tried once more to locate and release the remaining submerged moorings (without success), before conducting more mapping overnight. This morning’s Jason dive was cancelled due to electrical problems with Jason. All efforts are being made to rectify problems and conduct one last dive tomorrow before heading back to Guam. ETA pierside at Guam is 0800 30 March. Bow thruster is still non-operational (we have regained thrust, but no rotation), as is the Caley winch. Repair attempts/investigations continue on both.

During the last 24 hours, we completed another Jason dive yesterday afternoon, conducted plankton net tows/casts in the area overnight, and commenced another Jason dive this morning. Also, I forgot to include in yesterday’s report that on Thursday afternoon we recovered one of the “lost” submerged moorings (hydrophone). The mooring was discovered by Jason, released, and retrieved via our small boat. Hopefully this instrument will give valuable information on the landslide that has occurred here. Bow thruster is still non-operational (we have regained thrust, but no rotation), as is the Caley winch. Repair attempts/investigations continue on both.

U/W on KM 10-05, a fourteen-day cruise using ROV JASON to explore underwater volcanic activity near Guam and Rota. Cruise blog is at: www.nwrota2010.blogspot.com

During the last 24 hours we have conducted more mapping of the area, deployed a transducer at various locations in a search for the submerged moorings, and launched Jason. Contact was established with one of the four moorings, but it was determined that the mooring was in a horizontal position, probably due to landslides. The other moorings are believed to be damaged or lost, also because of landslides. The surface of the seamount has dropped/slumped considerably since last year’s visit. Jason recovery is scheduled for later this afternoon. Ship positioning has been stable enough without the thruster to continue ROV ops.
Bow thruster is still non-operational, as is the Caley winch, and the Sea-Mac winch. Repair attempts continue in all areas.

U/W on KM 10-05, a fourteen-day cruise using ROV JASON to explore underwater volcanic activity near Guam and Rota. Cruise blog is at: www.nwrota2010.blogspot.com

During the last 24 hours we:
1) Completed repairs to the Caley crane yesterday afternoon. The malfunctioning solenoid for the jib arm was swapped with the solenoid for the boom extension successfully. The downside is that we no longer have the use of the extension. We can conduct CTD casts without the extension.
2) Completed our first Jason dive successfully, retrieving Jason yesterday afternoon.
3) Were unsuccessful in our attempts to retrieve the first of four submerged moorings yesterday evening, due to being unable to establish comms with the release mechanism.
4) Were unsuccessful in our attempts to conduct another CTD cast due to failure of Caley winch motor last night.
5) Cancelled this morning’s Jason dive due to ship’s bow thruster casualty last night. Bow thruster failure came on the heels of ship blackout last night, believed to be caused by the Caley winch motor failure.
6) Conducted mapping survey of area this morning.
Were unsuccessful in conducting a plankton net tow/cast, due to failure of Sea-Mac winch late this morning.

U/W on KM 10-05, a fourteen-day cruise using ROV JASON to explore underwater volcanic activity near Guam and Rota. Cruise blog is at: www.nwrota2010.blogspot.com

During the last 24 hours we completed our transit to the NW Rota dive site, conducting mapping data enroute. Upon arrival, we conducted one successful CTD cast. While preparing for the second cast, the solenoid for the Caley crane jib arm malfunctioned, allowing the jib to be raised but not lowered. CTD cast was cancelled and crane repairs/troubleshooting continues. Jason repairs were completed and ROV was deployed successfully at 0400, recovery planned for 1600 today.

U/W on KM 10-05, a fourteen-day cruise using ROV JASON to explore underwater volcanic activity near Guam and Rota. Cruise blog is at: www.nwrota2010.blogspot.com

During the last 24 hours we completed the engineering tests that we had time for, transferred three riders ashore via small boat, and then transited to “Seamount X” 35 miles west of Guam, where we conducted one CTD cast (before a hydraulic leak on the crane cancelled any further casts planned that evening) and launched Jason. We recovered Jason shortly thereafter due to technical difficulties with the vehicles. The crane’s hydraulic leak was repaired, but Jason is still experiencing difficulties and undergoing testing, so we are moving to dive site 2, NW Rota (14-36N 144-46.5E), which we will reach later this evening. Crew, ship doing well, science anxiously awaiting news of Jason’s return to good health.
