ship and capsized. Not great news. We managed to make another pass and grapple the underside of the buoy and then get a line
on it and recovered the buoy. All gear on deck was 1620. Some of the instruments on top were damaged but the science data on
the inside was all right. No one was hurt. Will have more detail upon arrival. Will head back to Honolulu tomorrow evening and

Fuel on board: 83,325 gal

Potable water on board: 7,800 gal

Weather: Wind 060 deg T. 18 kts. // Sea and swell combined: 070 deg T. 6-8 ft.
Barometer: 1021.6 // Temp: 26.3 C // mostly sunny

Comments: Still conducting science ops around floating net arrays. Last night around 1930 while deploying for the deep
pump cast the .680 wire jumped the inboard sheave and was pinched between there and the wire guard. The strain was
taken off the wire and we were able to get the wire back on the sheave. There was some damage to the wire and it was
decided to be safe and re-terminate the wire at that time. The deep pump cast was then canceled. We are not sure at this
time what cause this to happen. New procedures have been put into place to help prevent this from occurring again. This
morning we were able to recover the floating net array with all gear on deck. Wind and seas picking up some. Conducting a
CTD cast at this time. Have a good weekend.

*********************************************************************************************************

KM 10-13 Noon report for Friday July 16, 2010

Weather: Wind 090 deg T. 12 kts. // Sea and swell combined; easterly @ 6 ft.
Barometer: 1020.8 // Temp: 25.5 C // Mostly sunny

Comments: Still conducting science ops while moving along with floating net arrays. While recovering the net array this
morning the top smaller net was recovered. The bottom larger net was lost when the line parted at the block. The net
was tending off to stb’d and the line got caught between the cheek and the shell then chaffed through and parted. The
lower net had the weight attached to it so when the line parted it sank. Still have more of the smaller nets and they will
be used for the next deployments. More care will be taken when recovering the nets to prevent this from happening again.
