this morning, after mapping/surveying for 15 hrs overnight. Snorkeling ops conducted successfully yesterday afternoon. No snorkeling scheduled

for today, three stations still to cover (single CTD casts at each) this afternoon into this evening. Monitoring Hurricane Elida closely, all forecasts

currently indicating no threat to this cruise. Science/ship going well!

#2 deployed yesterday (Sed Trap #1 deployed 11 July). Possible snorkeling ops again this afternoon if sea conditions allow. Bloom appears to be

fading, but science presses on!

KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, at Station 14, conducting CTD casts and net tows, after 12 hr transit overnight. Small boat motor

repairs successful and snorkeling ops completed successfully yesterday afternoon with multiple plankton samples obtained. Snorkeling ops

cancelled for today due to increased wind/chop. Fairlead malfunction on .681 wire winch resulted in approx 25 minute delay this morning during CTD ops.

Fairlead sensor adjusted and appears to be working correctly now.

KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, at Station 12, conducting CTD casts and net tows, after conducting mapping/surveying overnight. CTD

casts with .681 wire and A-frame working well. Snorkeling ops cancelled yesterday due to small boat motor running poorly. Boat motor issues

addressed by engineers, and will be op-tested today. Positive test will result in commencing of snorkeling ops this afternoon. Plan is for three

snorkelers in the water, remaining together in close vicinity of small boat, two boat crew members acting as safety observers.

KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, at Station 10, conducting CTD casts, having finished retrieving CTD wire and rosette yesterday and conducted

mapping/surveying between Stations 9 & 10. .322 traction winch not operable until replacement parts from shore are available, CTD rosette now attached

to .680 wire traction winch through A-frame. Total lost time for inability to conduct CTD casts was approx 25 hrs. Snorkeling ops commencing at 1300.

KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, at Station 9, conducted CTD casts and net tows until approx 0930, when gearbox on lower traction sheave on

CTD winch failed, locking in place with 470 meters of wire and CTD rosette over the side. Upon inspection of gearbox, multiple bearing and gear

failures were evident. Attempts at freeing sheave not successful, so wire and CTD rosette will be brought aboard bight by bight with NA Crane.

Discussions ongoing with Chief Scientist about possible alternate plans for remainder of cruise.

Potable water on board: 7615 gals Weather: wind 020 @ 18 kts, combined sea & swell NE’ly @ 05-07 ft, barometer 1016.1 falling, temp 20C, mostly cloudy

KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, at Station 7, conducting CTD casts and net tows (no snorkeling today due to sea conditions). ETD this Station

approx 1230, then transiting to Station 8 (31-40N 140-55W) for a CTD at 1400 today, then continuing on to Station 9 (31-11N 140-05W) for more CTD casts,

net tows, and, perhaps, snorkeling tomorrow! We seem to have found the bloom, casts/tows are providing rich samples. Electrical failure w/CTD winch

resulted in approx 15 min delay until repairs could be affected. HiSeasNet maintenance period resulted in loss of internet for approx 12 hrs, late afternoon

until early morning. All else going well w/equipment, crew, and science.

KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, at Station 5, conducting CTD casts and net tows (no snorkeling today due to sea conditions). ETD this Station

approx 1300, then transiting to Station 6 (31-29N 140-17W) for a CTD at 1500 today, then continuing on to Station 7 (31-46N 140-50W) for more CTD casts,

net tows, and, perhaps, snorkeling tomorrow! Following the bloom via satellite is proving tricky due to frequent cloud cover. We did some mapping/surveying

last night between stations, monitoring salinity changes. All still going well w/equipment, crew, and science.

transiting to Station 4 (32-04N 140-40W) for a CTD at 1500, then continuing on to Station 5 (31-46N 140-28W) for more CTD casts, net tows, and, perhaps,

snorkeling tomorrow! Ship’s webmail experienced an outage for approximately 24 hrs, yesterday AM to today AM. Webmail restored by excellent shipboard

(OTG) and shoreside (UH) support. Thank you!

area before recommencing with CTDs and net tows approx 0430. BloomWatch satellite imagery continues to show very promising data! All going well!

Short (less than an hour) ops delay this morning due to CTD computer software malfunction. OTG has rectified problem and all is functioning well now.

Continuing on KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, in transit to revised first station (30N 150W), ETA now 0230 04 July. We stopped for a few hours

yesterday afternoon and conducting training for science personnel on CTD casts and net tows as per Chief Scientist. The weather is much nicer today

compared to yesterday, when the CTD cast had to be cut short because of tension spikes due to the relatively rough seas. First station ops (CTDS and

net tows) scheduled to commence approx 0400 tomorrow.

Continuing on KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, in transit to revised first station (30N 150W), ETA now 0001 04 July. We will be heaving to for a short

time this afternoon and conducting training for science personnel on CTD casts and net tows as per Chief Scientist. Initial analysis of bloom data looks very

favorable for a successful cruise!

Underway on KM 0812, Brzezinski Silica Cycling Cruise, seeking to quantify the contribution of summer diatom blooms in the central North Pacific Subtropical

Gyre to the regional annual silicon cycle. ETA to the first proposed station is 1700 03 July. Appropriate chemical containers and necessary chemicals were

obtained on short notice for this cruise because of excellent shore-side support from the local scientific/tech community, a big mahalo (thank you) from all of us aboard!!
