KM 10-03 Noon Report 1200(W) 23 February, 2010
Noon Position is: 23-14 N 156-03 W

Fuel on board: 76,637 gals

Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 2857 gals

Potable water on board: 7100 gals

Weather: wind 160 @ 09 kts, combined sea & swell NNW’ly @ 05-07 ft,

Barometer 1016.5 steady, temp 21.9C, mostly cloudy

U/W on KM 10-03, a five-day ocean bottom-mapping cruise northeast of Oahu.

Continuing bottom-mapping with magnetometer deployed, science, crew, ship doing well. A test of the Caley CTD system yesterday afternoon was successful. Package entered water at 1241, lowered to 2000m at speeds from 30m/min to 60m/min, bottles fired, package retrieved at speeds from 30m/min to 60 m/min, package on deck at 1430. Heave compensation system utilized successfully during periods of deployment and retrieval (no wind, 6-8 ft swell). Video and stills taken.

Paraphrased from a report by OTG:

On the down cast, at 50 m line out, stopped winch and switched to long-cast mode. Package was then paid out at 60 m/min (1 m/sec). When we were at speed, we turned on heave compensator. Heave comp remained on until 2000 dBar depth. We fired all bottles at 2000 dBar with heave comp on. Winch operator stopped at ~1950 dBar and heave comp was left off for a minute. We then hauled in at 60 m/min and turned heave comp back on. Heave comp remained on until we were at 50 m wire out. We then turned heave comp off, switched to handling mode, walked package to 20m, and transferred control to winch pendant and recovered the package.

Observations: Winch readout not interfaced with ship’s system yet to enable viewing on the data channels. CCTV camera angles need to be changed to allow monitoring of wire over the side from the bridge (when Caley is in casting position, the wire angle is blocked by Caley crane body on one camera and is blocked by the a-frame on another camera).

ETA H buoy is 1000 25 Feb, then arriving 1100 at Snug for disembarkation of science personnel. We will then depart Snug at 1130 for fueling at Pier 30, returning to Snug approximately 1630/1700.

Noon Position is: 23-35 N 154-21 W

Fuel on board: 79,494 gals

Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 2994 gals

Potable water on board: 7100 gals

Weather: wind 160 @ 06 kts, combined sea & swell NW’ly @ 03-05 ft,

Barometer 1019.0 steady, temp 20.2C, partly cloudy

U/W on KM 10-03, a five-day ocean bottom-mapping cruise northeast of Oahu.

Continuing bottom-mapping with magnetometer deployed, science, crew, ship doing well. A 2000-meter CTD test cast will be conducted this afternoon. There was approximately one hour of significant reduction in quality of mapping data yesterday due to shipboard operation of fuel-transfer pumps. Now that it is known that these pumps interfere with mapping, their operation will be limited to periods that will not overlap science operations whenever possible.
