Currently we are at Station 50 (near WHOTS Mooring) having recovered the Sed
Traps and Gas Array, and conducted 2 net tows, 2 PRR casts, and 5 CTD casts
since our last report. All going well with ship and science. ETA remains
0800 at SNUG Harbor tomorrow.

Currently we are at Station Aloha, having recovered Seaglider139, deployed
the Sediment Traps and PP Array, and conducted 1 net tow, 1 PRR cast, 1
Go-Flo cast, and 5 CTD casts since our last report. We had to remove 4
meters of .322 CTD wire due to damage caused by tension spikes in mod-rough
weather. Slower winch speeds are currently being utilized until seas
moderate.

U/W on KM09-06, Student Cruise leg 4, where we will be
conducting respirometer (device used to measure the rate of respiration of a
living organism), CTD, camera, and trap deployments, along with plankton net
and IKMT (Isaac Kidd Midwater Trawl - designed to collect biological samples
in the midwater zone) tows. We have a teacher from Oahu's Dole Middle
School aboard for this cruise and she is doing a website for her students
about the adventure she is on with us. The URL is:

We have recovered the respirometer, the trap, and the camera,
and conducted 2 IKMT and 2 plankton tows since the last report. There were
no specimens found in the respirometer, and the camera strobe light failed
to work (rendering the pictures unviewable), but the trap yielded its best
results ever (according to the Chief Scientist)! All equipment working well
(other than camera strobe) and science and ship are doing well. ETA remains
0800 at SNUG Harbor tomorrow.

U/W on KM09-06, Student Cruise leg 4, where we will be conducting
respirometer (device used to measure the rate of respiration of a living
organism), CTD, camera, and trap deployments, along with plankton net and
IKMT (Isaac Kidd Midwater Trawl - designed to collect biological samples in
the midwater zone) tows. We have a research associate from Waikiki Aquarium
on board who has set up a couple aquariums here to observe specimens brought
aboard, and potentially bring them to the Waikiki Aquarium for viewing! We
will also be doing a bioluminescence lab and possibly some egg production
experiments. In addition, there is a photographer from UH magazine taking
lots of photos! Our stations are on the West Coast of Oahu (off Waianae) so
we should be sheltered from the strong E'ly winds forecast Friday-Sunday.

U/W on KM09-05, Student Cruise leg 3, with plans to conduct CTD, EAR
(Ecological Acoustic Recorder), and Waverider buoy deployments, one dredging
station, and one multibeam survey around the coasts of Kauai and Oahu . We
have completed 6 stations so far, with 11 remaining. There was a large pod
of 20-25 Spinner Dolphin playing and jumping around the Waverider buoy this
morning, just off Waimea, Kauai. This cruise we have 5 high school students
and 5 college undergrads along, all having fun and enjoying life at sea
learning about science! All going well with science and ship, currently
running ahead of schedule.

deployments . The Waverider buoy is deployed by hand and allowed to drift
for about one hour while recording wave heights. We have fallen slightly
behind schedule due to not being able to deploy CTD and buoy at the same
time (depending on currents/drift direction) at every station, but we are
doing our best as nature allows. Students new to tag-line handling are
picking it up fast thanks to expert OTG tutelage! All going well with
science and ship.

gale force winds and rough seas on the beam. Currently heading to last
survey site SW of Lanai. Overall, cruise/ship going well. ETA tomorrow
remains 0700 at Sea Buoy and 0800 at Pier 45.
