U/W on KM 09-22, a 03-day cruise north
of Oahu in support of C-MORE's
photoperiod experiment (testing a hypothesis concerning the role of changing
day-length in controlling the export of organic matter to the deep sea).
We
will be recovering two deep-moored sediment traps and one deep-moored
fluorometer, along with conducting multiple CTD and optics casts.
We are currently at the site of the second
deep-moored sediment trap
awaiting recovery. In the last 24 hours, we conducted 2 CTD casts, along
with deploying a pump for surface water sampling, at Station Aloha, before
moving to the site of the first sediment trap. Once on site, we conducted
some optical profiling before recovering the first deep-moored sediment
trap. Science, crew, and ship doing well.

microlayer sampling, deploy the AUV, and assist FLIP with camera
alignment/focusing. The AUV malfunctioned shortly after deployment and
was
recovered. Shortly after finishing the sampling and assisting FLIP, the
small boat outboard motor lost its propeller, drive/gearbox, and associated
housing. Small boat was recovered. Options will be discussed at our daily
science meeting this evening as to whether the sampling and AUV ops can
be
conducted in another manner. Science and crew doing well.

U/W on KM 09-21, a 24-day cruise south
of the island of Hawaii in support of
the RADYO program (Radiance in a Dynamic Ocean,
http://www.opl.ucsb.edu/radyo). We have science personnel from eight
countries aboard, participating in various experiments. We will be working
with FLIP (Scripps' Floating Instrument Platform,
<http://www.sio.ucsd.edu/voyager/flip> http://www.sio.ucsd.edu/voyager/flip)
in a joint effort on this cruise.
FLIP has arrived and we are keeping station
with them as best
we can. FLIP is drifting, and we hold position during our ops, so we have
to
reposition ourselves from time to time to stay close to FLIP. In the past
24
hours, we have conducted 2 CTD casts, and multiple deployments/retrievals
of
the Microstructure Profiler, MASCOT, RADCAM, Bioluminescence, and
Hyperpro/TSRB optics packages, along with 2 small boat launches, one for
2
hrs of sampling and one for retrieving an AUV part from FLIP. Science
is
hoping that this part will enable them to repair the AUV and commence
operations with it. Science, crew, and ship doing well.

deployments/retrievals of the Microstructure Profiler, MASCOT, RADCAM,
and
Hyperpro/TSRB optics packages, along with 1 small boat launch for 90 minutes
of sampling. During the CTD cast, the CTD fairlead sheave was noted to
be
contacting the sheave that leads onto/from the traction winch when the
fairlead reached one end of its travel. This occurred at about 600 m wire
out. The cast, targeted for 1000 m, was stopped around 600 m and retrieved,
stops being made to load bottles on the way up. Only stop missed was at
1000
m. After the cast was completed, the sheave leading onto/from the traction
winch was repositioned to allow adequate clearance between itself and
the
fairlead. Total detention was approximately 30 minutes. Science, crew,

The main plankton bloom that we came out

are no indications of another one nearby. We were going to head SW and
run a
series of sampling stations on our way back to Honolulu, but the path
of
Hurricane Felicia is preventing that. Instead, we have moved to a safe

precedent and collect some very interesting data. We will be keeping a
safe
distance away, as safety of our personnel and ship is our first priority.
Hurricane Felicia (08E) continues to move westerly away from us and will
continue to be closely monitored. Science and crew doing well. Ship is
currently working with three operable generators, as one generator tripped
off line earlier this morning and is down while the cause of the problem
is
being ascertained.

to
have faded. Science is now preparing another plan to have us start searching
for another bloom site. Hurricane Felicia (08E) and TS Enrique (07E) have
formed southwest of Baja, are forecast to head west, and will be closely
monitored. Science, crew, ship doing well.
