KM 08-15 Noon Report 1200(W) August 17, 2008 Noon Position is: 22-45N 158-05W Fuel on board: 33,920 gals Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 1415 gals Potable water on board: 7981 gals

Detention last 24h: 01 h 00 m (wire crossover on CTD traction winch) Total detention to date this cruise: 01 h 30 m

Weather: wind 085 @ 17 kts, combined sea & swell E’ly @ 06-08 ft, barometer 1019.0 steady, temp 25C, partly cloudy

Operating in accordance with HOT-204 Cruise Plan. Currently at Station Aloha conducting operations, having conducted 8 CTD casts, 4 net tows, retrieved the PP Array, and deployed the Gas Array since our last report. At 0450 this morning, a wire crossover was noted on the traction sheaves of the .322 CTD winch prior to starting operations. The wire was slackened and properly routed through the sheaves, resulting in a delay of approximately 1 hour. OTG inspection of .322 wire revealed no damage and re-termination not necessary. As of 0550, .322 CTD winch operating normally. No conclusive evidence found as to the cause of this problem, conjecture is that perhaps inadequate tension was maintained while pulling slack to allow crane-boom stowage after completion of previous CTD cast.

KM 08-15 Noon Report 1200(W) August 16, 2008 Noon Position is: 22-45N 158-00W Fuel on board: 35,335 gals Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 2107 gals

Potable water on board: 8165 gals Detention last 24h: 00 h 00 m Total detention to date this cruise: 00 h 30 m (generators)

Weather: wind 090 @ 18 kts, combined sea & swell E’ly @ 05-07 ft, barometer 1019.1 rising, temp 25C, partly cloudy

Operating in accordance with HOT-204 Cruise Plan. Currently at Aloha Station conducting operations, having transited from Kahe Station while towing the magnetometer and conducted 5 CTD casts, 1 net tow, 1 PRR cast, and deployed the Sediment Trap and PP Arrays since our last report. All going well and on schedule! No further generator problems experienced. Fuel usage on 4 gens versus 3 gens is approximately 10 gals per hr more, according to our fuel/speed consumption curves.

*********************************************************************************************************************

KM 08-15 Noon Report 1200(W) August 15, 2008 Noon Position is: 21-21N 158-16W Fuel on board: 37,442 gals Fuel Consumed (03 hrs): 400 gals

Potable water on board: 7931 gals

Detention since departure: 30 min (generators)

Total detention to date: 00 h 30 m (generators)

Weather: wind 125 @ 08 kts, combined sea & swell SE’ly @ 04 ft,

barometer 1017.6 steady, temp 29C, partly cloudy

Operating in accordance with HOT-204 Cruise Plan, currently at Station Kahe conducting operations. Lost 30 minutes at reduced transit speed this morning shortly after departure due to ship’s diesel generator problems (tripping off-line again without any reason, troubleshooting by contractors in port proved inconclusive). We will run all four generators while transiting until further notice. This will allow us to keep the critical timing of the HOT Plan, but will, of course, consume more fuel . We are still reducing to two generators while on station.

KM 08-14 Noon Report 1200(W) August 13, 2008 Noon Position is: 23-49N 157-37W Fuel on board: 39,423 gals Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 2226 gals

Potable water on board: 8046 gals Detention last 24 hrs: 4 h (reduced speed due to generator problems) Total detention to date: 15 h 30 m (generators) Weather: wind 100 @ 14 kts, combined sea & swell E’ly @ 04 ft, barometer 1016.6 falling, temp 25C, partly cloudy

Continuing operations on KM 08-14, Kolber-CMORE Cruise, having conducted 2 CTD casts, transited overnight at slightly reduced speed in search of the SID Array (not found), and recovered the remaining Sediment Trap Array and Seaglider since our last report. The GPS transponder had failed on the SID Array 48 hrs previously, and a subsequent night-time search of the area, after drift track and prevailing current were factored in, revealed no trace of either the radio beacon signal or strobe light attached to the Array. As the ship heads towards Honolulu, we will be re-deploying the Seaglider and two Harve (ProvBio) floats. ETA remains 0800 14 August. Even with the unfortunate loss of the SID Array and the ship’s generator issues, the information gathered during the past two weeks certainly made this a successful cruise!

Pictures below are of the Kolber science team for this trip and the Harve floats.

********************************************************************************************************************

KM 08-14 Noon Report 1200(W) August 12, 2008 Noon Position is: 25-31N 157-33W Fuel on board: 41,649 gals Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 1937 gals

Potable water on board: 7564 gals Total Detention to date: 11 h 30 m (generators) Weather: wind 070 @ 14 kts, combined sea & swell E’ly @ 05-07 ft, barometer 1019.0 steady, temp 25C, partly cloudy

Continuing operations on KM 08-14, Kolber-CMORE Cruise, having transited overnight at reduced speed and recovered one Sediment Trap Array this morning since our last report. We have rectified some of our diesel generator problems, and currently have three reliable generators (out of four) and approximately 90% of our usual speed. We will be conducting one CTD cast at this location before transiting south to the location of the other Sediment Trap Array and the SID Array for recovery. At that time we will assess conditions for Seaglider recovery/repair/redeployment. No change being proposed for arrival time 14 August. Tropical Storm Hernan being closely monitored, current forecast shows no threat to this Cruise.

Troubleshooting is continuing, and we are proceeding towards one of our previously deployed Sediment Trap Arrays at a much reduced speed. Hurricane Hernan and Tropical Storm Kika being closely monitored, current forecasts show no threats to this Cruise.
