Daily Reports for R/V KILO MOANA April and May 2009

******************************************************************************************************************************

KM 09-12 Noon Report 1200 May 31, 2009
Noon Position is: 11-22 N 142-35 E

Fuel on board: 107166 gals

Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 2124 gals

Potable water on board: 8000 gals

Weather: wind 200 @ 05 kts, combined sea & swell SW'ly @ 02-05 ft,

Barometer 1010.0 steady, temp 28C, mostly cloudy

U/W on KM09-12 (Bowen/Fryer HROV test cruise). We have
completed our transit to Challenger Deep and commenced our first dive,
arriving on the sea floor approximately 0945 this morning at a depth of
10,902 meters (the deepest we have been so far). We are currently exploring
the sea floor, heading up slope and taking core and rock samples. The main
high-resolution camera on Nereus has stopped working, we are continuing
operations with the two remaining cameras. Other than the camera issue, all
well with Science, Ship, and Crew.

Pic below is a still taken of the video feed from Nereus on the sea floor.
It is using its manipulator arm to attempt to take a rock sample:

KM 09-12 Noon Report 1200 May 30, 2009
Noon Position is: 12-39 N 143-48 E

Fuel on board: 109290 gals

Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 1959 gals

Potable water on board: 8000 gals

Weather: wind 155 @ 15 kts, combined sea & swell SE'ly @ 04-05 ft,

Barometer 1009.5 rising, temp 28C, mostly cloudy

U/W on KM09-12 (Bowen/Fryer HROV test cruise). We have
completed our transit to Apra Harbor, Guam to pick up additional scientific
supplies and are now enroute to the deepest point on earth, the Challenger
Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench, nearly 11,000 meters deep. We
are due to arrive in the area around 2200 tonight, then we will conduct a
short survey of the area before commencing our first dive. The current
record holder of the world's deepest dive is the manned bathyscaphe Trieste,
which reached a depth of approximately 10,911 meters (some reports state as
deep as 10,916 meters) in 1960. We hope to eclipse that record during our
investigation of the sea floor. The live video feed that has been coming
from our dive vehicle, Nereus, has been patched into our ship's data network
and is available for viewing throughout the ship, including the staterooms.
The footage from the sea floor here should be fantastic! Other than a
slight hydraulic leak from the manipulator arm on Nereus, all is going well
with science, crew, and ship. Anticipation is high for the coming week's
dives!

KM 09-12 Noon Report 1200 May 29, 2009
Noon Position is: 12-59 N 146-00 E

Fuel on board: 111249 gals

Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 1507 gals

Potable water on board: 8000 gals

Weather: wind 135 @ 14 kts, combined sea & swell ESE'ly @ 04-05 ft,

Barometer 1008.2 steady, temp 28C, overcast

U/W on KM09-12 (Bowen/Fryer HROV test cruise). After completing
another section of mapping/surveying, and having a PowerPoint and video
presentation by Tim Shank on the West Mata volcanism recently investigated
by the RV T. Thompson and ROV Jason ll, we conducted our fourth dive
overnight, reaching a depth of 29,700 ft. Dive went as planned, no major
hindrances occurred. Vehicle is now returning to the surface for recovery
later this afternoon. After recovery we will be proceeding to Apra Harbor,
Guam for a small boat transfer of science party supplies scheduled for 0600
tomorrow morning. After the transfer we will be proceeding to Challenger
Deep and remaining there for the rest of the cruise. All going well with
ship and crew, science is exceedingly happy with mapping/surveying results,
and Nereus' fine-tuning seems to be progressing well.

Pics below are of the ship maneuvering alongside Nereus for recovery:

KM 09-12 Noon Report 1200 May 28, 2009
Noon Position is: 13-12 N 146-02 E

Fuel on board: 112756 gals

Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 1686 gals

Potable water on board: 7900 gals

Weather: wind 100 @ 13 kts, combined sea & swell E'ly @ 03-05 ft,

Barometer 1007.9 falling, temp 28C, mostly cloudy

U/W on KM09-12 (Bowen/Fryer HROV test cruise). After completing
another section of mapping/surveying we conducted our third dive overnight,
but good fortune was again not on our side. After approximately 15 minutes
on the sea floor (around 21,250 ft), the fiber optic link between the
depressor and the dive vehicle Nereus parted and the dive was aborted. The
vehicle was retrieved and troubleshooting revealed that the newly installed
.680 wire had caused the depressor to rotate 17 times, wrapping the fiber
optic line around the depressor, and eventually leading to the line parting
from the dive vehicle when the vehicle reached the bottom. The fiber optic
line is a single strand, 0.25 mm in diameter, consisting of a fused silica
core wrapped in a plastic outer sleeve. The line is normally prevented from
breaking by a tension-limiting brake on the spooler. General belief is that
the spinning of the depressor will not happen again, although of course, it
will be watched closely and whatever precautions that we can take will be
taken. Mapping/surveying is being conducted again until this evening, when
the next dive is scheduled for a depth between approximately 23,100 - 26,400
ft. After this next dive, if all goes well, we will be moving to Challenger
Deep and spending the rest of the cruise there. All is well with ship and
crew, and science is maintaining good spirits during this teething period
for the new vehicle.

Potable water on board: 7900 gals

Weather: wind 090 @ 13 kts, combined sea & swell E'ly @ 03-05 ft,

Barometer 1009.3 steady, temp 28C, mostly cloudy

U/W on KM09-12 (Bowen/Fryer HROV test cruise). After completing
another section of mapping/surveying and having an informative PowerPoint
presentation by co-Chief Scientist Patty Fryer on the Mariana Trench, we
conducted our second dive. After approximately two hours on the sea floor
(around 11,550 ft) a hydraulic leak was detected on Nereus and the dive was
aborted. The vehicle was retrieved and troubleshooting to isolate and repair
leak are ongoing. Mapping/surveying is being conducted until this evening
when the next dive is scheduled for a depth of approximately 21,500 ft.

KM 09-12 Noon Report 1200 May 26, 2009
Noon Position is: 13-11N 144-51E

Fuel on board: 115987 gals

Fuel Consumed (24 hrs): 1990 gals

Potable water on board: 6900 gals

Weather: wind 090 @ 13 kts, combined sea & swell E'ly @ 03-05 ft,

Barometer 1009.5 falling, temp 31C, partly cloudy

U/W on KM09-12 (Bowen/Fryer HROV test cruise). We have
successfully completed our first dive, reaching a depth of approximately
2800 feet for about 4 hours. Mapping/surveying is being conducted between
dives, next dive scheduled for this afternoon, target depth 12,000 feet. We
are progressively working our way deeper on each dive, towards our ultimate
goal of 35,000+ feet at Challenger Deep. All going well with ship and
science, no re-occurrence of heat-related issues with our dive vehicle
(Nereus).

Barometer 1010.0 falling, temp 30C, partly cloudy

U/W on KM09-12 (Bowen/Fryer HROV test cruise). Departure was
delayed approximately 24 hours due to troubleshooting of a heat-related
malfunction of one of the HROVs electrical systems. Although not entirely
isolated and rectified, confidence is high that workarounds enacted will
prove to be a viable fix. Discovery Channel film crew is aboard and
documenting this historic event. We are currently at our first station,
approximately 7 miles off the NW coast of Guam, and conducting our first
at-sea test dive. All going well!
