I must say, I have never seen so much debris in the water as I have in the
past 24 hrs. we have passed through an area full of small plastic and
Styrofoam bits, some as large as a soft ball but most the size of a quarter
or smaller. We departed this area of debris sometime between 1100 and
1200 this late morning, it will be interesting to see when we pass through
this area north bound, if it’s still here or has moved off with the currents.

Have a pleasant weekend.

We were able to stop this morning and test CTD winch, as you may recall on
the last cast of HOTs we had an issue with level wind, and an issue with wire
kinking on deep casts. During the test cast Level wind work perfectly, we did
have an issue with speed of winch increasing to well over 60 meters a minute.
I will let OTG go through Scott on this but we believe the problem is stemming
from the MRU. We also tested the Emergency Portable De-Watering Pumps
while on station, and Pump #3 failed and is non-operational, Joe is in contact
with John concerning warranty and repair.
