After some troubleshooting yesterday afternoon, engineers replaced a connection and had the
Caley operational with a down time of approximately 2 ½ hours. Arrived at Station Aloha last
evening to find the Japanese R/V Hakuho Marus occupying the immediate area. Language
barrier has been a problem and as best we can determine the vessel will remain at Sta Aloha
until tomorrow morning. Array launches have been postponed for safety concerns and not
knowing the other vessel’s intentions or operations.

remain issues with onboard components of the system. Last evening the rock saw failed and
despite the very best efforts of engineering personnel, it remains out of commission with
minimal impact at this stage of the cruise. Parts on order. The towcam contacted the seabed
during the morning operation and appears to have hung up momentarily. There is some question
as to a possible Caley control fault/failure being looked at. The towcam frame experienced
miniscule impact damage (hardly noticeable) and none of the sensitive equipment suffered
damage. Ship, crew and science doing well.

We lost our CTD last night during deployment, we placed the package in the water and were bringing it up to the
surface to zero the meter readout, when it fell off the wire. The wire did not break, the fitting attached to the end
of the wire came unscrewed. The fitting is called a Electro Fitting and is similar to a Figgie Fitting, the wire is secured
into a socket and is crimped in place with a plug, this socket is then screwed into a housing and it is attached to the
CTD frame with a shackle. Attempt to recover CTD by dragging for it was unsuccessful.

One of the groups of scientist, have a failed part on a critical computer for their research and are looking at
ways to get it repaired or replaced, it may call for altering the cruise track to bring us closer to Christmas
(Kiritimati) Island. If this does materialize I will need assistance from the office to check on clearances, I do
not believe this will be an issue but need to be sure. If this does happen, I believe it would be seven days from
now. Right now they are still looking for the part or replacement computer.

there was nothing attached to the surface floats, and he was correct. We recovered the transponder
buoy and floats, the samples, line and anchor were lost sometime during the 24hr array deployment.

No further problem with laying cable on the drum
and gaps developing due to level wind.
We are slowing the recovery rate as the wire nears the drum cheeks. Latest
issue is
the wire seems to be “twisted” when it comes aboard near the
termination of the cast and
this is becoming problematic when preparing for the next CTD. Cause as
yet indeterminate,
but the CTD rosette does have a spin to it when it leaves the water. We’ll
start prepping
for subsequent casts earlier to avoid delays to schedule.

issues with the Caley level
wind leaving gaps in wire lay which necessitates backing off and relaying

time. The engineers are monitoring the system, but the problem may be
related to loss of tension due
to heave.

Conducted a 1,000 meter CTD with the CALEY this
morning, there were a few hitches,(operator error &
equipment error) but overall it went well. The system stopped at 300 meters
on the down cast, it took
10 mins. to figure out the max depth was set to 300 meters on the long
cast. Also, several bottles did not
seat/seal when they were tripped, and water seeped out when the CTD was
being recovered. These are
relatively minor issues but I can’t treat them as such, at this
stage of our CALEY operations.

At 1225 it was reported that cable from Hyper Pro was caught in Stbd Screw,
it was estimated that 150 meters of
cable was deployed at the time of this incident. After several attempts
we were unsuccessful in freeing the
cable from the rudderpost and/or screw. We were able to recover the instrument
by coming ahead on the
thruster to ensure instrument was trailing aft. and using a modified grapnel
we snagged the cable and retrieved
the instrument. 1318 Hyper Pro on board. At 1356 we secured from attempts
to free cable from rudder
and/or screw.
Request a diver Monday morning to inspect rudder
and screw for remaining cable, the cable is a small dia (3/8 )
insulated electrical cable. We did retrieve as much as we could before
losing it over the side. Continuing with
planned science operations.
