State and federal partners help Jim Lakey, lab supervisor, and his team at the Hawai?i Institute of Marine Biology to remove coral heads blocking the east lagoon channel and moving them to an area that has been devoid of reef since it was dredged in the 1950s.

The waters in Waikiki temporarily donned a fluorescent green hue, the result of testing how a project headed by the Hawaii Sea Grant Extension Service to replenish beach sand would affect waves at the world-famous surf spots.

SOEST scientists discover a giant tsunami caused by the collapse of part of Mauna Loa volcano 120,000 years ago surged more than four miles inland and deposited coral at the 1,600-foot level of the Big Island.
