Current Projects:

  • Responsible for the management, development and implementation of the Hanauma Bay Education Program’s (HBEP) education outreach and interpretive programs to enhance both visitor and community experiences of the one million annual Bay visitors, bring awareness of their ecological footprint through proper reef etiquette, recruit and maintain a strong volunteer corps of trained community members who are trained to provide environmental introduction and interpretation to Bay visitors, and fosters community stewardship of marine protected areas and wise use and management of the island’s coastal areas.  The three primary programs are:
  • HanaumaBay Education Volunteer Program.  Over 150 volunteer interpretive guides contribute over 11,000 hours each year and become involved in actively promoting conservation education and sharing their knowledge with the visitors and residents to this popular nature preserve.
  • HanaumaBay Preserve Education Program.  Orientation presentations are given to over 400 groups annually often specialized to address the needs of individual visiting groups, to educate about appropriate environmental behavior and the importance of the marine preserve.
  • HanaumaBay Outreach Program.  Weekly public evening presentations and special evening public events are organized and hosted by HBEP staff throughout the year to share marine and coastal research and issues with community audiences.
  • Coordination of the Fisheries Nupepa Project, which involves working with other interested programs to access fisheries information and history in Hawai‘i through Hawaiian language newspapers from the early 1800’s.  These historic views will provide documented accounts of the wise traditional management of resources and assist in the development of current resource use policies.
  • Review and Advisory Committees for the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative Program’s Coastal Tourism and Reef Conservation outreach team’s development of new initiatives and the development of the K-3 Marine Curriculum Project.
  • Education Advisory and Planning Team for the new UH Center for Microbial Oceanography Education and Research (C-MORE) which developed the education strategy and 5-year education plan for the $20 million center recently funded by the National Science Foundation.
