Programs

The Hanauma Bay Education Program operates out of the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Our education staff organizes programs at the Bay as well as off-site at local educational, research and community institutions. Check out our calendar for upcoming events, such as educational lectures, natural history films and special programs. Please contact us if you would like to bring a group to the Bay or are interested in having a staff member visit your organization.

The main thrust of the education program is the large force of volunteers that interact with the general public. Our education staff conducts periodic training sessions for new volunteers, which include information on Hanauma Bay’s geology, marine life, conservation efforts, ocean safety, environmental regulations and park interpretation. Our volunteers in turn help educate the public.

Another large focus of the education program is conducting group orientations. The City and County of Honolulu requires that all groups visiting Hanauma Bay obtain a permit. Permits entitle groups to guaranteed parking, immediate entrance to the Bay, a private showing of the mandatory Hanauma Bay educational video, and a brief orientation to Hawaii’s coral reef ecosystems or, if requested, to a topic tailored to the group’s interests. Groups may also schedule longer programs if they do not wish to get in the water during their visit.

The Hanauma Bay Education Program operates several community enrichment programs. The Bay hosts educational lectures and natural history films on alternate Thursday nights. Periodically, the Bay also hosts joint programs with the Waikiki Aquarium, including classes for the whole family. Education Program staff will also do off-site visits for docent training, marine science education or just to talk about the Bay. The Education Program also operates several school programs, including group orientations, teacher training workshops, school lectures, visits to career and science fairs, etc.
