Attention: Sea Grant REU site program 2006

Successful applications will include (1) a copy of your undergraduate transcripts, (2) a resume, (3) three letters of recommendation, and (4) a statement of intent (one page maximum, 11 point font minimum). Please include all materials in the same envelope. As this program is intended to help students contemplate a career in marine science and marine biotechnology, the program only accepts students who will returning to their undergraduate program. Also, applicants with previous REU experience will not be accepted. Graduate seniors are not eligible for this program. We also highly encourage students from Hawai‘i and U.S.- affiliated Pacific Islands to apply.

Also, the program is limited U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Transcripts. Include in your application your complete course transcript for College and University. Do not include high school. Transcripts should be provided for all courses and academic work taken post high school.

Resume. Your resume is an important part of your application. It is important that you list (in separate sections) your (1) honors or awards and (2) experience and skills, and (3) academic background. Please follow exactly the format below. As our program is oriented towards research experience in marine science and marine biotechnology, your application will be helped by highlighting those honors, skills, and academic courses that are relevant to marine science and marine biotechnology. Include lab skills gained in coursework as well as from previous experience in laboratories and work. With respect to honors and award, it is advised to first highlight those awards that were won in competitions.

All applications MUST follow the format given here or they will be not accepted:

· Name and address (include email)
· Year in school and GPA
· Education
High School (AP courses, curriculum emphasis..ect)
     Community College (GPA, degree)
     University (GPA, major and minor)
· Experience (research and work - volunteer or paid, previous programs..ect)
· Skills (gained from lab courses or work or research..ect)
· Honors (Deans list, competitive awards or honors, scholarships…etc.)

Letters of recommendation.

These are very important and the student is advised to take caution to consider who they ask to write letters on their behalf. As our program is a rigorous academic program we are looking for letters from people qualified to address the student’s capacity to succeed and benefit from our program - with specific regard to marine science or marine biotechnology. It is also suggested that the student give their referees ample time to write their letters and give them as much information about them and how their goals relate to those of the program. Please include these letters in your application materials.

Statement of intent.

You must put your name on this page. This is also a very important part of the application. This letter should describe clearly why the student is interested in the program, what the student’s goals are, and how this program will help him/her achieve them. It is not necessary that the student’s goals be to pursue research in marine science or marine biotechnology (for example one of our students has been accepted to Veterinary School), but it is necessary that the student demonstrate how research in marine science or marine biotechnology will help them pursue and achieve their goals. Goals that are related to further research experience will be weighted favorably.

Please include all materials, including your letters of recommendation, in your application. The MSURF program cannot guarantee that letter of references sent separately will be added to your application. Also, letters of references or applications sent by email will not be accepted. The student is advised to leave plenty of time to acquire the necessary letters, and to add them to your application packet. MSURF will not accept any applications whose letter of reference are not in separate sealed envelopes to ensure confidentiality. All letters of reference will be kept confidential.
