Announcements

The deadline for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) second annual “Living on the Ocean Planet” video competition is January 25th, 2010.  The competition is being hosted in partnership with the Census of Marine Life (CoML), the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), and the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL).  The goal is to showcase student-developed original videos that educate the general public about marine technology and address the Essential Ocean Literacy Principles.

This year the contest will include regional winners as well as a National winner. The winning team from each region will be awarded a top prize by their regional site and will be posted on You Tube as well as on each of the regional NMEA Chapter websites that are serving as a regional video contest host.  The National winner will be invited to attend the 2010 NOSB Finals Competition in St Petersburg, Florida!

Please encourage high school students to participate! You do NOT have to participate in the NOSB competitions to enter this contest.  If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.  We wish you the best of luck in this year’s competition!

Sea Grant Marine Science Center showcases activities at SOEST Open House:

Our center supported the 10th Biennial School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) Open House at UH-Manoa on October 16th and 17th.

Open House was a huge success, with over four thousand students, teachers and parents registered (and even more in attendance). In our center’s inaugural participation in Open House, we had LONG lines of participants ready to make their own ocean, fish for knowledge, test stream water, view themselves with an infra-red camera, and explore the geology of Hawaii.

We also co-sponsored the Open House poster contest; Maui Jim’s Sunglasses donated prizes of backpacks and sunglasses (winners also received a pizza party for their class). Students art related to these three Ocean Literacy Principles:
1. The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate
2. The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems
3. The ocean is largely unexplored

Thanks to the wonderful Sea Grant Research Assistants who made Open House possible – Jacque Kelly, Sherril Leon Soon, Bradley Romine, Charles Young, Alex Parisky (check out their biographies on our partners page)!

If you didn’t make it to Open House this year, make sure to come check it out or even sign up to be a volunteer or share your research in 2011 (remember SOEST Open House only happens every two years)!
