a Includes (NO3- + NO2-, PO43-, NH4+, H4SiO4)

b Via UV oxidation in line with autoanalyzer

c TDP determined by the high temperature ashing method of Solorzano and Sharp (1980), modified by Monaghan and Ruttenberg (1999), which provides more complete recovery of all types of DOP compounds more than UV or persulfate methods (Ridal and Moore 1990; 1993); samples to be run on autoanalyzer after oxidation. DOP can be determined as the difference between TDP and PO43-.

d Analyses can be conducted by facility users for an hourly rate (see user based charges)

e Ion titrations include calcium, magnesium, chloride, fluoride

f Samples must be wrapped and ready for analysis

g Sulfur cannot be measured on filters

h Training prior to facility instrument use is mandatory

Additional Facility Charges

There will be an additional surcharge applied to all non-UH federally funded users. This surcharge will cover indirect costs for maintenance of the facility currently covered by the university. Non-UH Price List (PDF)

Specialized academic-grade analysis of samples for private/commercial users is available upon request. An additional surchage for analysis of such samples will be added to the non-UH federally funded rate. Private/Commercial Price List (PDF)

Water samples

Inorganic nutrients (NO3- + NO2-, PO43-, NH4+, H4SiO4) on SEAL Analytical AA3. Total cost is $22.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs. Samples must be filtered, frozen, and stored in plastic bottles (glass sample bottles will compromise H4SiO4 analysis). Minimum volume for analysis is 50 ml. If dilution or pH adjustments are required please see additional costs under Technician Charges (below).

Total dissolved nutrients (Total Dissolved Nitrogen (TDN) and Total Dissolved Phosphorus (TDP)) on SEAL Analytical AA3; Dissolved organic N and P (DON, DOP) can be obtained as the difference between total dissolved and dissolved inorganic nutrients. Total cost is $17.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs. TDN and TDP analysis occurs via an on-line UV digestion system. Samples must be filtered and frozen. Minimum volume for analysis is 50 ml (100 ml for both inorganic and organic nutrients). If dilution or pH adjustments are required please see additional costs under Technician Charges (below)

Total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) via high temperature ashing (HTA). Total cost is $10.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs. Samples must be filtered and can be frozen or acidified/refrigerated. Minimum volume for analysis is 5 ml.

Total dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen (TOC/TN) on the Shimadzu TOC/TN analyzer. Total cost is $17.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs. Samples should be collected and frozen in glass vials. The autosampler tray uses 24ml borosilicate glass vials; samples collected in these vials can be analyzed without an additional transfer. Minimum volume for analysis is 20 ml.

Dissolved inorganic carbon analysis of seawater samples on UIC coulometer coupled to VINDTA: Total cost is $52.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs including hourly rate for technician time. Samples should be stored in gas tight containers, poisoned and ready for analysis. Minimum volume for analysis is 500 ml.

Dissolved oxygen and ion titrations analysis on the Metrohm Titrando. Total cost is $17.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs including hourly rate for technician time.

Conductivity analysis on the Metrohm Titrando. Total cost is $7.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs including hourly rate for technician time. Samples should be stored in gas tight containers to prevent evaporation. Minimum volume for analysis is 10 ml.

Alkalinity analysis on the Metrohm Titrando. Total cost is $27.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs including hourly rate for technician time. Samples should be stored in gas tight containers, poisoned and ready for analysis. Minimum volume for analysis is 200 ml.

Particulate samples

Particulate carbon and nitrogen analysis (CN) on the Exeter Elemental Analyzer. Total cost is $9.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs. Samples should be pre-wrapped and ready for analysis. Discuss sample set with laboratory technician prior to preparation to ensure proper sample mass. Users are welcome to use the facility to prepare samples, please contact the facility to arrange a time for sample prep. If preparation of samples by S-LAB technician is required, please note the cost under Technician Charges (below).

Particulate carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur analysis (CNS) on the Exeter Elemental Analyzer. Total cost is $15.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs. Samples should be pre-wrapped and ready for analysis. Discuss sample set with laboratory technician prior to preparation to ensure proper sample mass. Users are welcome to use the facility to prepare samples, please contact the facility to arrange a time for sample prep. If preparation of samples by S-LAB technician is desired please note the cost under Technician Charges (below).

Total or inorganic phosphorus via high temperature ashing (HTA). Total cost is $14.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs. Samples should be provided as filtered particles on PC or PP filters, or as bulk homogenized/ground sediment. Discuss sample set with laboratory technician prior to preparation to ensure proper sample mass.

Inorganic carbon analysis on UIC coulometer: Total cost is $22.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs including hourly rate for technician time. Samples should be provided as bulk homogenized/ground sediment. Discuss sample set with laboratory technician prior to preparation to ensure proper sample mass.

Chl a analysis on Turner Designs fluorometer. Total cost is $9.00/sample; includes analysis against standards and all associated costs including hourly rate for technician time. Samples should be provided as filtered particles on GF/F filters. Discuss sample set with laboratory technician prior to preparation to ensure proper sample mass.

User-based analyses

The cost for user-based analyses is $15.00/hour or $120.00/day. All users will be required to undergo training with the facility manager prior to using facility instrumentation. During training, users will be responsible for paying the hourly rate for the lab manager of $90.00/hour. It is estimated that training will take 2–3 hours, depending on instrumentation and users’ prior knowledge. Users will have access to common lab equipment (ovens, balances, DI water, centrifuge, muffle furnace, pellet press, etc). Users must supply their own quality control standards. The following instrumentation is available for user-operated analyses:
