PODS: Purpose

The Physical Oceanography Dissertations Symposium (PODS) had its first meeting in June 2002 (Breckenridge, Colorado). By 2022, twelve meetings had been conducted, with an upcoming meeting in October 2024. This symposium, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), brings together new doctoral graduates in physical oceanography or the related field of environmental fluid dynamics to create cohort groups of scientists interested in jobs in academia and research at the start of their professional careers. The symposium fosters interactions between participants, providing a venue for the new PhDs to present their research to each other in a formal setting and including multiple informal opportunities for one-on-one exchange of ideas.

For the last several meetings, DISCO (Dissertations Symposium in Chemical Oceanography) has run concurrently with PODS, with many opportunities for cross-meeting interactions.
