Introduction
Marine fish are tagged and tracked with a suite of different electronic devices of varying degrees of sophistication. In the past 10-15 years, these devices yielded an impressive amount of information on the details of behavior and movement on different time and space scales. This symposium will provide an opportunity for scientists working in all areas of the Pacific Ocean, and from both sides of the Atlantic, to review the state of the art of electronic tagging and tracking. To examine the type and quality of information currently obtained and to identify future research challenges and tag developments. This symposium will appeal to:

![]() Results to Date. Electronic tagging and tracking devices have been applied to marine teleost and elasmobranch fish ranging in size and habitat from small demersal species to large pelagic species. Some of these studies have benefited from the use of multiple devices developed for other applications. The special section on "crossover" studies will highlight some of these innovative approaches. Results from the following general classes of devices will be presented:
Unresolved Problems. In spite of these impressive results, a number of serious problems persist. Recovery of data remains a serious impediment to the use of these devices on species with a low tag recovery rate. Satellite up-links have yet to deliver their full potential. Under what circumstances are "listening stations" a viable alternative? Accurate geolocation has proven elusive and we may have reached the limit of resolution of light-based algorithms. Can statistical methods improve the accuracy? Efficient management of the large amount of data generated by archival devices is challenging. Can geographic information systems help? How can the results from archival tagging be integrated with conventional tagging and tracking data? How does one distinguish between a remotely reporting tag that fails to report and a dead fish?
Future Developments. What are the next steps? How can these devices be improved? What is important to measure? How can we promote better use of the data? Is there any possibility to creation of data archives to assist in data analysis?
Applications to Fishery Management. Data from large pelagic species has been useful in helping modelers refine stock assessment methods. How does knowledge of fish behavior improve fishery management? |

Symposium Location
The symposium will be held in the East-West Center's Imin Conference Center (Jefferson Hall) on the University of Hawaii's Manoa campus. This facility provides an intimate and informal setting for discussion in a lush tropical environment. Located on the university's upper campus the conference center is within walking distance of UH research libraries, dining facilities and the National Marine Fisheries Service's Honolulu Laboratory. | |

Hotel Arrangements
![]() Program organizers are looking into arrangements for a free daily shuttle for tagging symposium participants. Morning pickup and afternoon dropoff between the Waikiki Terrace Hotel and the UH campus. Symposium participants not staying at the Waikiki Terrace would be welcome to use the shuttle but they must catch the shuttle from the Waikiki Terrace Hotel. Since on-campus parking is limited ($3/day) participants are encouraged to use the shuttle service. Preliminary bus shuttle schedule (PDF file posted 1/24/00) A block of rooms has been reserved at a special reduced rate (US$82 per room + tax) for symposium participants at the Waikiki Terrace Hotel in Waikiki, about 3 miles from the UH campus. The Waikiki Terrace is located near the west (ewa) entrance to Waikiki overlooking Fort DeRussy Park and near some of Honolulu's nicer restaurants.
*** As of January 24, the Waikiki Terrace is completely booked up. *** Reservations must be made directly with the Waikiki Terrace reservations office (Hawaii Reservations Center Corp.) and 2 nights deposit is required. In order to qualify for this special rate, reservations must be made by December 22, 1999. Please mention that you are with the "UH Tagging Symposium Group".
