Integration of Hawaii Longline Fishery Performance Model with Environmental Information

Principal Investigator: Christofer Boggs
Collaborating Investigator: Keith Bigelow

The goal of this project is to improve the assessment of the swordfish resource exploited by Hawaii longline fishermen by incorporating and evaluating environmental influences affecting the availability and catchability of the resource. Initial goals of the project are to:

  • Examine and quantify environmental features, especially sea surface temperature (SST) fronts, that are expected to be important to the dynamics of swordfish distribution and gear vulnerability.
  • Improve interpretation of swordfish catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data used by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council in evaluating management alternatives for the domestic longline fishery
