Aloha Colleague,

As a key source of recreation, food, and cultural sustenance, the ocean plays a vitally important role in our island community. The ocean environment is also central to many science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education initiatives in Hawai'i. Many valuable marine-related STEM education projects and programs have flourished throughout our islands, often in a loosely coordinated manner. To ensure the greatest possible success for these activities and to minimize duplication of efforts, we must create new avenues for collaboration among key stakeholders, including scientists, educators, and government agencies.

It is with great pleasure that we invite your organization to participate in a alliance aimed at establishing a framework for collaboration in ocean science education in Hawai'i, the newly formed Ocean Literacy Alliance-Hawai'i (OLA-HI), Sponsors include the federal Interagency Working Group for Ocean Education (IWG-OE), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Office of Education, and numerous partners from the University of Hawai'i.

We recently held a workshop, where we reviewed ongoing efforts, strengthened existing collaborations, and developed strategies to build new partnerships.
