Mesoscale Spectral Model Application in Hawaii: Experiment Setup

The experimental procedure is designed as follows:

  1. Download the AVN outputs for 00Z (1400 HST) to provide the boundary and initial conditions for the 10-km RSM run. This downloading process takes about 4.5 hours to complete on the ES40 system.

  2. Run the 10-km RSM for the state of Hawaii initialized at 00Z by the AVN outputs. The initial surface conditions are provided by the 24-hour RSM forecast from the previous run. The grid points for this run are 97*76 with 28 model layers. For a 48-hour simulation, this run takes about two hours of CPU time to complete on the ES40 system with four EV67 processors. The outputs from this run are available on the website after 2300 HST the same day.

  3. Run the 1.5-km MSM for the Oahu domain initialized at 00Z by the 10-km RSM outputs. The initial surface conditions are provided by the 24-hour MSM forecast from the previous run. The grid points for this run are 73*62 with 28 model layers. For a 48-hour simulation, this run takes about 9.5 hours to complete on the ES40 system with four EV67 processors. The outputs from this run are available on the website after 0900 HST the next day.
