I joined Dr. Businger's team at the University of Hawaii in 1997. I was fortunate to witness the evolution of the Smart Balloon and to participate in the Aerosol Characterization Experiments, ACE I and ACE II, as well as the highly successful AIRMAP campaign. I provided trajectory calculations and graphical output for the various balloon tracks. My thesis work involved modeling the dispersion of volcanic smog (locally known as vog) . I have worked extensively with the HY-SPLIT model along with MM5 , RSM/MSM, and GFS numerical weather prediction models.
