SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE (SST)
Sea surface temperature anomalies decreased throughout the eastern equatorial Pacific during July. By early August, equatorial SSTs were near average in most areas between 180°W and the South American coast, while positive anomalies persisted between Indonesia and 180°W. By the end of July the patterns of tropical convection, atmospheric circulation, SST and subsurface ocean temperatures were near average, indicating ENSO Neutral conditions. Subsurface temperatures were near normal to depths of 500 meters across the equatorial strip of the tropical Pacific, with a few small patches of water approximately 1° C warmer than normal at depths of 50 to 100 meters. With ENSO Neutral conditions, equatorial SST should be near average. |
