Geologists investigated areas in the Hawaiian Islands to refine hypotheses about the history of growth, subsidence, and massive slumping. They found that the terrace on the upper part of the giant Wailau landslide was volcanic, not a drowned reef as originally thought. This along with other evidence indicates that Molokai has undergone virtually no subsidence for about a half million years. A young drowned reef off Kahoolawe was sampled for radiometric dating because it may be a key to establishing the ages of neighboring, deeper, and older drowned reefs.
